  Alwar was founded about 1772 by a Rajput chieftain of the Naruka clan, Rao Pratap Singh of Macheri, a descendent of the family which had ruled Jaipur in the fourteenth century. Alwar was distinguished for being the first Princely State to use coins struck at the Calcutta Mint.

The Nawabs of Awadh traced their origins to Muhammad Amin, a Persian adventurer who had attached himself to the court of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah, early in the eighteenth century. In 1720 Muhammad Amin was appointed Mughal Subhedar of Awadh, in which capacity he soon exhibited a considerable measure of independence. In 1865 Awadh was annexed by the British on the grounds of internal misrule. In 1877, Awadh along with Agra was placed under one administrator and made part of United Provinces in 1902.

  Baroda
  The ruling lineage of Baroda descended from Damaji, a Maratha soldier, who received the title of ‘distinguished swordsman’ in 1712. The Baroda title Gaikwad comes from the work Gaikwar or cow heard- Damaji’s father’s occupation. The Gaikwad family rose to prominence in the mid eighteenth century by carving out for themselves a dominion from the territories which were previously under the control of the Poona Marathas. Baroda State maintained good relations with the British and continued as a major Princely State upto 1947 when it acceded to the Union of India.

Bharatpur
 
Bharatpur was founded by Balchand, a Jat chieftain who took advantage of Mughal confusion and weakness after the death of Aurangzeb to seize the area. In 1756 the ruler at that time, Suraj Mal, received the title of Raja. Bharatpur came under the British sway in 1826 and remained under its control until it acceded to the Union of India.

  Bikaner
 

Bikanir located in Rajputana, was established as a State sometime between 1465 and 1504 by Jodhpur ’s Rathor Rajput named Rao Bikaji. During the Mughal period, Bikanir was closely linked to Delhi by ties of both marriage and friendship. Bikanir came under British influence in 1817 and after 1947 was incorporated into the Union of India.

A State located in west-central India . The rajas of Dewas Junior Branch and Dewas Senior Branch were brothers. They were descendents of two brothers, Tukoji and Jiwaji who were given Dewas city in AD 1726 by Peshwa Baji Rao as a reward for army services.   Indore State originated in 1728 with a grant of land north of the Narbada River by the Maratha Peshwa of Poona to Malhar Rao Holkar, a cavalry commander in his service. After the death of Malhar Rao Holkar his daughter-in-law Ahilya Bai Holkar assumed the position of Queen Regent. Together with Tukoji she effectively ruled the State. After 1802 the residual.

State of Indore accepted British protection and remained under its control until India ’s independence in 1947.

  Jaipur
 

The Maharajas of Jaipur, chief of the Kachwaha Rajputs claimed their descent from Lord Rama. The name of the Sate ‘Jaipur’ is usually preceded by the word Sawai (one and a quarter), the title given by Muhammad Shah to Jai Singh II, which signified that latter was superior in knowledge and authority to his fellows. Maharaja Jai Singh shifted his capital from Amber, the ancient seat of the kingdom and laid foundation of the present city of Jaipur in 1728.

Jaisalmir city was established by Rawal Jaisal, after whom both the city and the State were named. Jaisalmir reached its zenith during the Mughal era. With the Mughal disintegration, Jaisalmir too fell upon hard times and most of its outlying province was lost. The State came under British protection in 1818 and after India got its independence in 1947, the city became part of Rajasthan in 1949.
