COLONIAL INDIA
|
|
|
European
explorers arrived in India in 1498, with Portuguese adventurer,
Vasco- da Gama, making landfall on the Indian coast. Within
a decade, the Portuguese had established their first trading
company in the Sub continent and by 1510 were producing
their own coinage. However, this monopoly ended shortly
as the Dutch, French, British and Danish entered India
. All four began to produce coinage in India during the
early decades of the seventeenth century, either at their
own initiative or with Mughal authorisation. After the
disintegration of the Mughal empire began the era of struggle
and supremacy of the colonial powers in India . |
